Frequently asked questions What is the Trails desktop app? The Trails desktop app helps you capture workflows on your computer and turn them into clear training content. Instead of manually writing docs or recording videos from scratch, you can use Trails to create step-by-step guides and polished video walkthroughs much faster.
Why do I see the security popup when installing on Windows? You may see this security popup because our Windows app is still in beta. Microsoft displays this warning for newer apps until they have built up enough reputation with users. As more people install and use the app, the warning should eventually disappear.
Why should I use the desktop app instead of the browser extension? The desktop app is the better choice when your workflow goes beyond the browser. If your process involves desktop software, multiple applications, system settings, or switching between windows, the desktop app gives you more flexibility.
Is the Trails desktop app secure? You stay in control of what you capture and share, and Trails is built to support teams that care about keeping documentation secure. Before any screenshots are sent to our servers, you can blur out any sensitive information. And once the guide is created, you can continue to redact information securely. All communication to our system is protected with end-to-end encryption.
What permissions does the desktop app need? Like most desktop recording tools, the Trails desktop app may need permission to access your screen and accessibility settings so it can capture workflows properly. You may also be asked to allow additional system permissions needed for recording, such as microphone recording for voice transcription.
Do I need a Trails account to use it? Yes, you’ll need a Trails account to create, save, and manage your content. Creating one is free. If you’re joining as part of a team, your workspace may already be set up for you.
What should I do if the desktop app isn’t working properly? Email support@trails.so with the details of the issue, including the version number of the app you have installed.
